SXSW Sucks

Sucks away all interest in doing anything else, that is. Thanks much to all the wonderful bands and fans and parties - I haven't done anything else!

It's sweet. But I tell you, these bands need to be paid. It's only right. Exposure is one thing, but that doesn't feed the kids today.

New Music Philpot

Introducing Philpot:

Joey Reynolds, WOR Radio "These kids play kick ass rock and roll with a technical virtuosity that is nothing short of astounding. Kentz Ward is the most charismatic front man since Axl Rose and Kurt Cobain."

Zink Magazine "Tight chops, fresh and memorable melodies and choruses, never guilty of rehashing their predecessors."

Illinois Entertainer "…riffs that check everything from Guns N' Roses to Led Zeppelin in Stooges-styled distortion…Philpot ensures rock isn't dead."

OK. So those are pretty breathy reviews. Put on your boots and wade on over to see if they are worthy. Thanks for the tip Kerscene.

UK Mortgage News

I've been reading the news section on Mortgages over at Money Magic - and it seems the United Kingdom government is getting smart about educating home buyers on their finances.

One of the issues people in the UK can get advice from the government on is saving for a mortgage deposit (better known as a down payment in some parts). This is welcome news, since sadly, most educational systems do very little to teach young people how to prepare for buying a home or taking out a mortgage. I am not aware of the foreclosure rate or rate of default in the UK, but in the U.S. it is particularly bad at this time.

Housing minister Yvette Cooper was quoted as saying the free advice could prevent regular people from getting ripped off by loan sharks or by failing to note the small print in financial dealings. While there has already been help for people who are in serious debt, the same could not be said for "ordinary" families who could "do with some free guidance at many points in their lives," Cooper said.

Congrats then and good luck on finding and buying your own home! There is nothing like it.

Moog Me - Human Response

Magnatune is hooking you up with some Human Response - take a listen:

Moog enthusiasts will absolutely love Immortal, volume two of Jan Hanford's ongoing analog archives series of Moog music she created in the 1980s. Intelligent, contemplative, and highly melodic, this album instantly conjures up acertain dreamily modern feeling of that period and flows easily from one song to the next, like a more intimately scaled Tangerine Dream.

Cherine Anderson Going SXSW

This is the real, honeys!

A SXSW performance not to be missed! Jamaican songstress Cherine Anderson - a protege of legendary drum n bass duo Sly & Robbie since the age of 15, this young beauty (and acclaimed Jamaican actress) conjures up thoughts of Lauryn Hill in her prime. But Cherine's sound is all her own. Dubbed 'Dancehall Soul', Cherine's music is a mixture of all the genres she loves and has been inspired by - dancehall, reggae, r&b, and soul - all rolled into one powerful package. Her range as an artist and songwriter are as diverse as the artists she has already had the pleasure to work with; from writing about her home's volatile political state in "Kingston State of Mind" to giving you some "Good Love".

Get your reggae on Saturday, March 15, at 10:00 p.m. at the Flamingo Cantina (515 E 6th St). Get a taste of Cherine here.

Insure Your Goods

OK kids, if you don't know it by now, I'm telling you life is a risk. And I'm not just talking about whether your new Britney Spears CD will be a hot rocking bullet or a suicide attempt waiting to happen. I'm talking about the big things you acquire - cars, homes, that new Harley Davidson. These things all need the same thing and that thing is insurance.

My U.K. homies can ease their minds with AutoNet Insurance - a company that says out front, "We want to give you the opportunity to experience our excellent insurance service. Find cheaper insurance with the same level of cover, we'll quite happily give you a refund - no problem!*" (Find out for yourself what that little asterisk means. I can't do it all.) You can get online quotes easier than you can plaster your scooter against a lamp post and they even offer Courier Insurance, something I have to say I've never encountered the need for here in the States. Unfortunately, you have to be aware that your tools aren't covered by courier insurance and I suspect that your guitars, drums and disco ball may be classified as tools. Even your band mates may be classified as tools.

In any case, protect the things you've earned. It just makes sense.
